On November 25, 2025, GLH held a special session in collaboration with the Hiroshima University MEXT DE&I Program, an initiative led by graduate student, Engy Turk. Students met the GLH team, had discussions with coordinator Dr. Nassrine Azimi, learned from our Master Gardener Chikara Horiguchi, heard about UNITAR Hiroshima Office activities, and finally participated in an actual seed picking at Atago-Ike. We were additionally fortunate to welcome to this event old and new friends—our longstanding GLH partner from Leiden Botanical Gardens Dr. Rinny Kooi, Ms. Junko Yaginuma of RCC, Prof. Luli van der Does and two of her students.

On August 6th, Professor Uye, a trustee of the GLH committee, led a tour at Hiroshima University showcasing the hibakujumoku trees planted on the campus. These 23 trees are aligned and collectively create the "path of peace". Commencing with a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m., Professor Uye shared insights about the second-generation hibakujumoku, aiming to inspire participants to contemplate the importance of peace.

On August 6th, Prof. Shin-ichi Uye, GLH Committee member, held a tour of the second generation of Hibaku Jumoku on the campus of Hiroshima University. He organized this event to encourage attending students to reflect on this symbolic day, and become familiar with the unique trees. Prof. Uye wants to continue similar activities in the future, to motivate young people to see trees growing and to talk about peace with one another.

Thanks to Professor Shin-ichi Uye, GLH friend and Committee member, a second-generation survivor Aogiri (Chinese Parasol) was planted on the campus of Hiroshima University.  The official ceremony, to plant all species of Hibaku Jumoku and creating the ’Small Peace Path’ on campus was canceled.  But this did not stop our devoted Prof. Uye from marking this special week — and Earth Day — by planting this lone sapling. It shall hopefully soon be joined by its many other friends!
