The University of Melbourne - Regional Hub
213 Grattan St, Carlton 3053, Victoria AUSTRALIAWe are honored to announce that the University of Melbourne is now the GLH Regional Hub for Oceania. We would like to thank the devoted Virginia McNally for her unwavering support. It is our hope that GLH's message and family will steadily flourish through this important 1,000-year project.
The Ginkgo biloba seeds sent to The University of Melbourne have successfully germinated! Each pot (pictured right) contains five seeds (three seeds per pot have germinated so far). Our partner, curator and arborist Virginia McNally, writes:
You can just see the cotyledon poking out in the centre of the marked red circle. The ones in the other pot are looking like real ginkgos with their beautiful distinctive leaves. There is a real buzz about the nursery with people checking their progress very regularly and reporting growth and new emerging seedlings.
2024 marks the first time that the only Eucalyptus hibakujumoku—located on the grounds of Hiroshima Castle—gave fruit, which were collected and sent to our partners in Australia. While no seeds were found, we will all persevere and try again next year.

Ginkgo and Eucalyptus seeds safely arrived in Australia, thanks to Hiroshima Botanic Garden! GLH partners Virginia McNally, Athanasios Tsakonas and Anoma Pieris (pictured left) received the seeds and Virginia will now begin the germination process. This has been a first for GLH, to dispatch seeds of the Eucalyptus tree on Hiroshima Castle grounds.
