From Jo Brennan, our partner at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

"The sweet little Ginkgo seedlings pictured have been grown to mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Green Legacy Hiroshima (GLH) shared Ginkgo biloba seeds from a hibakujumoku - trees that survived the bombing - with the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV) with the aim of promoting peace and nuclear disarmament and highlighting the resilience of nature. RBGV staff collaborated with the University of Melbourne, Victoria’s first GLH distribution center, to import and propagate these symbolic seeds. One of these seedlings will be planted in the RBGV Melbourne Gardens and the rest shared with interested organisations to promote this important message."

Some updates from our wonderul partner Jo Brennan at RBGV:

"I have just visited our nursery and can happily report that we have 13 healthy little Ginkgo seedlings potted into tubes. Several other seeds have swollen so we hope a few more may germinate. Unfortunately they will be too small to plant on August 8th this year but we are hoping to hold a planting ceremony next year, perhaps for the 81th anniversary. We will, however, post on social media update to mark the 80th anniversary. Spreading the message of peace could not come at a more important time."

2024 marks the first time that the only Eucalyptus hibakujumoku—located on the grounds of Hiroshima Castle—gave fruit, which were collected and sent to our partners in Australia. While no seeds were found, we will all persevere and try again next year.

We are delighted to learn that Jo Brennan of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria could receive today a batch of hibakujumoku Ginkgo seeds, hand delivered by GLH partners Virginia McNally and Dominic Napoleone of the University of Melbourne. Under a shining sun, a small handover ceremony was set against the backdrop of one of the Gardens' flourishing Ginkgo specimens. The seeds are currently undergoing cold stratification in the Gardens' nursery as they prepare to be sowed. We extend our gratitude to all involved for their efforts to make this exchange happen.
