We wish to thank the Dunedin Botanic Garden and the unwavering support of Lee Vallance in New Zealand, for the wonderful work they are doing. We are happy to present some of the planting initiatives from seeds that were donated in 2017 by GLH to Dunedin Botanic Garden.

  • The saplings have been successfully nurtured and planted in the Otago and Canterbury regions, attended by the Mayor of Christchurch at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. The Dunedin Botanic Garden has been a pivotal partner in this effort, with numerous saplings now thriving in their care and in local community spaces.
  • Community plantings have taken place in and around Dunedin, which have been a point of pride for the local Rotary club, as well as for Dunedin City Council.
  • An update from Dunedin City Council.
    • Official planting was on World Peace Day, September 21, 2024, attended by the Mayor of Dunedin.

Pictured left, some scenes from the past weeks

On May 15, 2025, apprentices planted ten trees, each 1.2-1.5 metres tall, in the Dunedin Botanic Garden arboretum. Located between the sports field and the Dunedin Northern Cemetery, this new grove—part of the Green Legacy Hiroshima initiative—sits alongside a popular walking track. We are all excited to see them flourish!

A ginkgo, nurtured from seed to sapling for seven years, was planted on World Peace Day in Dunedin. Thank you to all of those in New Zealand who have made this planting a reality.

Our partners at Dunedin Botanic Gardens sent us pictures of the growth of their hibakujumoku Ginkgo trees in early May. The Ginkgo seeds sent in 2017 are now saplings, enveloped in a brilliant golden color. Picture of GLH partners Lee Vallance with the curator of the Dunedin Botanic Garden (right).

Thanks to Mr. Lee Vallance we have some updates from Dunedin Botanic Garden in New Zealand: 'The Manager recently inspected the saplings, photos displayed here. They are seen located outside in their shade house, in two different sized pots. The tallest is approximately 450 mm tall and the smallest is around 200 mm tall. The weather in the shade house in the last two months has not been the most ideal, but the saplings are all still healthy and growing!'
