Our wonderful partner in the Netherlands, Dr. Rinny Kooi, visited Hiroshima on November 25th alongside her husband and Hiroshima peace guide/activist Keita Takagaki. They participated in our seed picking event with Hiroshima University. Rinny came bearing many gifts, including a touching message and poem from Breda, who have been one of GLH’s most engaged and active ambassadors.

Some exciting updates from our dedicated partner, Dr. Rinny Kooi at Leiden Botanic Garden:
At the beginning of 2025, a hackberry (Celtis) was planted in Leiden, related to a Tree Peace Action in Leiden. In March, trees will be offered in the cities of Dordrecht and Breda. A Celtis in Dordrecht and a Ginkgo in Breda a Ginkgo. Another Celtis will be planted in Oegstgeest soon.

Dr. Kooi also plans to send ginkgo seeds to Wageningen (the City of Peace in the Netherlands) on May 4, 2025, to commemorate the day when the German Military Capitulation was signed, marking the end of World War II.

With gratitude to GLH partner Rinny Kooi and her colleagues in Leiden, to David Dowd, James Ross and their colleagues at GLH regional hub at CAFRE, Northern Ireland, to Nakahara-san and the team at the Hiroshima Botanic Garden — and to generations past and present, who have tended to the seeds and saplings, and will do so in the future.
