Dr. Gerdhard Jessen, deputy director of the botanical garden at the Universidad Austral of Chile, shared special news about their trees on this August 6, and their future vision :

‘….We are happy to announce that a new milestone was achieved 6th August…we planted the second-generation trees from the survivor trees we have been raising since 2011. As you can see in the attached pictures and the design created by our landscape collaborator Claudia Salinas, 19 trees are now at the definitive site in our Botanical Garden.’

An article published in the Yomiuri Shimbun about six camphor and 13 ginkgo of hibakujumoku that survived the tragic fires in Chile. New leaves have sprouted from these trees, encouraging residents during the recovery process. To read the article, click here (Japanese).

We are happy to announce that the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACH) is now our new regional seed hub! Their photos also show the healthy survivor trees’ second-generation saplings they have been raising on site.

The university has launched a website about their Green Legacy project.

An exposition with the seedlings was held for 10 days. The exposition included a ceremony on the 6 August with local authorities, members of UNESCO, the National Institute of Human Rights, and the Japanese Embassy at the Casa Museo Santa Rosa de Apoquindo in Santiago.
